One of TO’s great NEW bad-ass Cuban bands, these guys grab the crowd and make them dance!
admin
He rose to fame during his seven years as lead singer and songwriter for Cuba’s foremost timba band Charanga Habanera, now Leoni Torres is even more popular as a solo artist making waves on the crest of Latin pop.
With the success of Leoni’s first CD, Bajo la Piel (Under the Skin), he is fast becoming an international star. Seven of the albums’ tracks rapidly found their way onto the top of the charts in Cuba, and also were successful on the charts of many radio stations throughout Latin American. ‘Bajo La Piel’ reveals Leoni’s interpretative versatility, great potential for pop and his taste for ballads.
The CD also displays elements of thematic balance and musical diversity with Torres? openness to other composers, including Edgar Rodríguez, Osmani Collado and Polito Ibañez.

Hilario Durán – Celebrating the first 35 years!
Doors: 6PM
Show: 7PM
Tickets: $20 advance $25 at the door
Marking, the 35th anniversary of the beginning of his musical career, Cuban Canadian pianist Hilario Durán kicked off a twelve month celebration with a performance by his renowned 13-piece Latin jazz band with special guest Jane Bunnett at Lula Lounge in September of last year.
The year-long celebration included a sold out performance as part of the Olympic cultural programming in Vancouver, an appearance at the prestigious Lewiston Jazz Festival and very successful European, US and Canadian tours.
Fittingly, a year later, Durán returns to Lula with a retrospective that presents music from all eras of his first 35 years of composing, performing and recording.
With long-time collaborators Yailen Duran, Joaquin Hidalgo, Luis Mario Ochoa, Alexander Brown, Roberto Occhipinti, Mark Kelso, Luis Deniz, Pol Coussee, Christopher Butcher, David Dunlop and Jeff King, Durán will present a wide variety of music ranging from jazz, rumba and samba, to bolero, waltz, and Cuban son showcasing both his versatility and virtuosity. The evening will include duet pieces with special guest Jane Bunnett as well as a performance by his dynamic and highly-acclaimed trio (comprised of Roberto Occhipinti and Mark Kelso). Audiences will hear first hand why Hilario has been hailed internationally for his finesse, authenticity and fire!

Luis Mario Ochoa is kind of Toronto’s “Nat King Cole” of Cuban son… but he brings the full Cuban tumbao to Lula with his Cuba Tradicional. This will be a good show… for those stay away from live shows and complain it’s the same bands doing the same songs, here’s a change!
$10 at the door or book a table for our $45 dinner and show package.
Admission includes our famous beginner’s dance lesson (no partner necessary) at 8 PM + Luis Mario Ochoa and Cuba Tradicional starting at 10PM and dancing all night long with Toronto’s best DJs!
Band leader Luis Mario Ochoa is well known for his salsa and latin jazz recordings which can often be heard on both JAZZ.FM and CBC Radio as well as on NPR in the states. Ochoa has performed extensively with the likes of Hilario Duran, Guido Basso and Paquito Rivera. He is a classicaly trained guitarist who has always kept his ear tuned to the pulse of traditional Cuban music. Be ready for exciting arrangements of classic songs and new compositions which draw on his diverse musical experience.
