Statement of CCFA Toronto on the death of the Honourable Jack Layton, Leader of the NDP
It is with great sadness that we learned of the untimely death of the Honourable Jack Layton, leader of the Opposition New Democratic Party of Canada.
Jack Layton was a friend of Cuba and a strong advocate of peace and social justice. Last August, just over a year ago, he participated in a public meeting at the Steelworkers Hall in Toronto dedicated to the struggle for the freedom of the Cuban Five who are unjustly imprisoned in the United States. These five heroic men are anti-terrorists, who were simply trying to prevent terrorism against Cuba. Jack listened to the international union presenters and listened to the pleas of family members of the Cuban Five present and took the microphone and gave his commitment that the NDP will raise awareness about justice for the Cuban Five.
In consideration and respect of the State Funeral for Jack Layton, we are cancelling the 16th Annual Toronto-Cuba Friendship Day scheduled for August 27 at Nathan Phillips Square
The Canadian Cuban Friendship Association Toronto expresses its heartfelt condolences to Jack’s wife, Olivia Chow and his son Michael and daughter Sarah and granddaughter Beatrice. We also extend our condolences to the NDP Parliamentary Caucus, all members of the NDP and to progressive Canadians who will miss Jack in the struggles to come.
Jack’s final words, written to the many constituencies he has worked with, speak volumes about his spirit of struggle and hope for the future for Canada and the world.

Marking, the 35th anniversary of the beginning of his musical career, Cuban Canadian pianist Hilario Durán kicked off a twelve month celebration with a performance by his renowned 13-piece Latin jazz band with special guest Jane Bunnett at Lula Lounge in September of last year.
The year-long celebration included a sold out performance as part of the Olympic cultural programming in Vancouver, an appearance at the prestigious Lewiston Jazz Festival and very successful European, US and Canadian tours.
Fittingly, a year later, Durán returns to Lula with a retrospective that presents music from all eras of his first 35 years of composing, performing and recording.
With long-time collaborators Yailen Duran, Joaquin Hidalgo, Luis Mario Ochoa, Alexander Brown, Roberto Occhipinti, Mark Kelso, Luis Deniz, Pol Coussee, Christopher Butcher, David Dunlop and Jeff King, Durán will present a wide variety of music ranging from jazz, rumba and samba, to bolero, waltz, and Cuban son showcasing both his versatility and virtuosity. The evening will include duet pieces with special guest Jane Bunnett as well as a performance by his dynamic and highly-acclaimed trio (comprised of Roberto Occhipinti and Mark Kelso). Audiences will hear first hand why Hilario has been hailed internationally for his finesse, authenticity and fire!

About Luis Mario Ochoa:
Born, raised and educated in Havana, Cuba, Luis Mario Ochoa is a celebrated singer, guitarist, composer, arranger, educator and bandleader. Performing salsa, Cuban son and latin jazz, Luis Mario is one of the most in demand Cuban Canadian artists in the country and has worked extensively with jazz giants Paquito D’Rivera, Hilario Duran and Guido Basso. His 2005 release Cimarrón and 2008 LP Momentos Cubanos received accolades from both salsa and jazz audiences and can be heard frequently on CBC Radio and Jazz FM.
Join us for The Heavyweights Brass Band’s blowout debut CD release concert. This much-anticipated CD includes Cuban sonero/rapper Ogguere and soul/rock vocal powerhouse Saidah Baba Talibah.
Not since 1980s band The Shuffle Demons has there been such a fresh and fun take on jazz. Not your standard jazz fare, The Heavyweights Brass Band repertoire delivers a special brand of popular and diverse music with a punch and an enthusiasm that makes jazz accessible for everyone from eight to 80. They range from funk, soul, R&B, and traditional New Orleans jazz – complete with tuba – to tasteful retro throwbacks (including War and Michael Jackson) to artistes du jour Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga.

Elmer Ferrer is one of the most versatile and prolific session musicians from Cuba. Elmer’s signature fusion music has been called “an advanced mix of Cuban jazz with electric blues” that has brought him international acclaim as one of the strongest voices in today’s world of modern guitar music. His recording credits comprise more than sixty CDs, including two Latin Grammy nominee albums and an Oscar nominated movie soundtrack.
Relax to a blend of traditional and modern jazz piano as noted Cuban pianist Orlando Cardoso and his trio perform at Watusi (110 Ossington Ave.). Show starts at 11 p.m. Like most of what is happening on Ossington, it’s part of Havana Cultura.
