ABOUT TANGIN:
Tangin Fong, who is part of the third Chinese immigrants’ generation in Cuba, is a lover of movement on the stage. He has decided to live and create in his country with a contemporary perspective, open to exchange and take in all subjects related to his work. His way of making art- which converges different legacies: Cuban contemporary and modern dancing, Cuban folklore, acting, singing, music- makes a restless, dynamic attitude which is connected to the show business of the XXI century.

Tangin fills the stage on his own human and cultural dimension. His inexhaustible creative potential makes him to go back over and over to the artistic works he performs. He creates live music, gives a different sense to the scene or show; he explores on the vocal sonority and acting that comes from actors, musicians and dancers on the stage.

Born on September, 24th, 1973 in Santiago de Cuba. In his native land, during primary and secondary education he participated in singing, dancing and sports activities from 1987 to 1989. In 1989 he began to study modern and folk dancing at the National School of Arts, in Havana.

In 1992 he majored in Cuban Modern and Folk dancing and teaching. After this, he participated in dancing festivals and competition, obtaining different awards as choreographer and dancer. In 1992 he joined the Contemporary Cuban Dance Company where he worked up to 1995. In this company he danced relevant works of important Cuban choreographers. In 1995 he began teaching popular, afrocuban and contemporary dancing classes in Japan.

From the very beginning he has created his own dancing and musical works; he has also worked with Japanese choreographers, dancers and musicians. Tangin Fong mixes all forms of artistic expression into the body dancing language, including martial arts. His purpose is original and peculiar; it is based on the body movements, showing a natural energy of great expectation.

ABOUT YUKO:

Yuko was born in Tokyo, Japan, though she has resided in Cuba since 2000. She graduated from the Superior Institute of Art (ISA) in Havana, Cuba certifying her in Folkloric dance.

At the same time, Yuko studied Afro-Cuba percussion, principally bata drumming with Master drummer, Angel Bolaño.

After her four years studying at ISA, she began working with professional folkloric troops in Cuba. Most notably Yuko was both a percussionist and dance for the all female group “OBINI BATA”.

Currently Yuko works in Cuba, where she is both a vocalist and dancer for CORPUS SPIRITU ALMA, as well as a vocalist with the jazz group, SON CHARANGA ALL STARS.

10:00 pm

After their show earlier in the month, Son Aché is the current definition of “dance party” in Toronto.

One of Toronto’s most popular Cuban music groups, Son Ache performs their patented blend of high-energy son montuno that has been packing dance-floors for many years.

Just $15 for dancing only or $49 for the dinner, dance lesson and show package. Our dinner package guarantees seating for the night and includes any appetizer, any main course and any dessert, the 9pm beginner salsa lesson and three sets by the live salsa band.

This collaboration of some of the top Cuban/Latin musicians in Toronto began in 1999 with mutual goal to compose, interpret and perform classic son montuno, the root of contemporary salsa. Their appeal derives from a successful melding of diverse talent, infectious energy, years of combined musical education, knowledge and experience, and the obvious affection for the music they play: a driving and aggressive tumbao which gives the group it’s contemporary urban edge and ˜sabor (flavour). Son Ache maintains the integrity, tradition and passion, while broadening the allure of old cuban son, and engaging a wider audience of dancers and music lovers of all backgrounds… see “www.myspace.com/elsonache

Alberto’s professional career began with a big break at the age of 17 by landing a position with the esteemed Cuban group Orquesta Pakasón led by Delio Cardoso. He went on to perform and record with many of Cuba’s finest musicians.

He has toured internationally with Juno award winner and Grammy® nominee Jane Bunnett, has recorded several albums with Juno award winning pianist Hilario Durán, and regularly joins Latino celebrities such as Oscar De León and the Afro-Cuban All Stars on stage when they visit Toronto.
