Ritma Cuba, a summer vacation option for hands-on music in Cuba

March 28th, 2011

Joyce Humbert has taken on representation of French organization, RitmaCuba.   Many people here know Joyce and will be interested in this trip.  I’ve seen some fine dance clips of theirs on Youtube.  ( If you search, remember it’s “Ritma” not “Ritmo”, must be a marketing concept ;-) .

Each year’s program is unique and each year a number of not-to-be missed activities complementing the courses are arranged for the group with special emphasis on carnaval. Examples from previous years are a neighbourhood rumba/street party, a visit to a rehearsal of the oldest conga comparsa group in Santiago, the Conga de los Hoyos, a chance to dance along in the “Invasion of the Congas” pre-carnaval, a day at a beach (with music) and special concerts. In 2010, some of the activities included a day trip to Guantanamo to take in some changuï and a concert by the only steel band in Cuba. Other years included a visit to the shrine of the Virgin of Charity, (patron saint of Cuba and Ochún in the santeria religion), in the mountain village of El Cobre outside Santiago and a day at a local beach off the beaten path complete with pig roast. And of course, there are lots of places to go out at night, dance and maybe even sit in with the band, places like Casa de la Trova, Casa de la Musica, Casa de las Tradiciones, Los Dos Abuelos, Artex, and during Carnaval, the streets!

Dates – July 11-25, 2011
Price – $2,041 CDN (program, lodging + return air Toronto-Santiago and taxes included)*
Option : you may arrange own flight and request accommodation for different dates but for the program you must be in Santiago from the 11th until the morning of the 23rd.

In their first year, the Heavyweights have gained a strong following in Toronto, playing regularly to packed houses at the Gladstone Hotel, the Painted Lady, and world-famous jazz venue The Rex Hotel, as well as raucous post-concert parties for visiting New Orleans legends Nicholas Payton, Allen Toussaint and Gregg Stafford. Their live repertoire features original compositions, neo-soul tunes, classic R & B songs, New Orleans jazz standards, and outrageous arrangements of Top-40 pop hits – a winning combination that never fails to get a crowd on its feet. The band will be going into the studio the week after to record there first full length cd.

Review: Jane Bunnett’s “Cuban Rumba Roots Meets Jazz”, Hugh’s Room

March 22nd, 2011

At Hugh’s Room last Saturday March 19, Jane Bunnett and friends returned to a standing room only crowd.  They delivered what the fans expected, and then some: a night dedicated to her two big inspirations… the jazz groove, mixed with plenty of Cuban tumbao.

The band included some familiar company for Jane, like husband Larry Kramer on trumpet, and Hilario Duran from Cuba on piano and other jazz and crossover players.

The new ingredient is Iya Ire, a Toronto-based group of percussionists, singers, and dancers.  Iya Ire plays “rumba”, the traditional Cuban music from African and Spanish roots.

Latin Jazz is possibly an overused term… you could say it covers a lot of pretty bland stuff by now.  But, you wouldn’t say that about this music: the range and spark that Jane achieves playing with Cuban musicians is clearly unique.  It got off the ground a bit tentatively, then by the middle of the 2nd set Hugh’s Room was in orbit: really cooking.

It’s quite amazing to see how Jane trusts the rumberos to take the ball.   With the Cubans, the tune will often dive into pure Cuban styles, with no compromises. Then the jazz side of the band takes the ball, and they find a jazz inspiration in anything the rumberos do.  Exciting music…

Jane told the crowd that this is just the beginning of her outings with Iya Ire: now there is something to watch for with high anticipation.

By the way, Iya Ire is at Motivo’s, 1042 St Clair West, every Sunday afternoon about 4 PM.  This is not tourist rumba, not the corporate event package: it’s what you might find in Centro Havana, the real thing.  Rumba from the grass-roots.

How does that happen here?  People like Jane planted the seeds: she brought a lot of great Cuban musicians to town over the years.  From Merceditas Valdes, to Ray Barretto, to David Vireles, to Vocal Desandann… opening the ears, attracting the musicians, building the momentum.
