José Martí Cuban Dinner & Dance – Great Food, Great Music, Great Company

Featuring The Clave Kings.  Plus: Canadian Jazz musician Jane Bunnett, and Cuban pianist/composer Hilario Duran, will perform a few of the the pieces that will be on their yet to be completed CD of Cuban classical music.

Benny Escalante and the All Cuban Ensemble – Jan 29 at Trane

Benny Escalante was born in San Fernando de Camarones, a small town of the Cienfuegos province. For several years, he was part of the Andres Mena’s Orchestra, a well respected music teacher and band leader involved in all kind of musical events- creating possibilities for musicians and music students wanting to pursue their career as professional musicians. While working in the sugar cane fields, he helped to build the popularity of the orchestra in the Central part of the country sharing stages with the Aragon Orchestra, Benny More Orchestra Fajardo y sus Estrellas and other famous bands of the 1950’s. In the late 50’s Benny moved to Havana and started to play with the Mariano Garcia Orchestra, the Havana Riviera Orchestra, and Havana Libre Orchestra. Benny has recorded as a soloist as well as a backup vocalist and featured in Glenda del E’s Q-ban Mixology last CD and has been awarded several prestigious awards from the Cuban Ministry of Culture.

A repeat of last year: we received this notice of the winter party of the Cuban Canadian society PECCAN.  This year with a cooking context, and serious prizes.

En este invierno comenzando el 2011 vamos a recrear la tradición de buenos cocineros que heredamos de nuestra cultura.  Nuestra Fiesta de Invierno va a tener como tema un Concurso de Comida Cubana.

Vayamos a la Fiesta, conozcamos a nuestros coterráneos en esta tierra. Probemos los platos preparados por los concursantes y démosle nuestro voto al mejor.

Aquí viene otra forma de participación: ¿Puede usted brindarse como voluntario(a) en la organización de la fiesta? (necesitamos ayuda para servir la comida, para recoger y contar los votos, fotógrafos, animadores…)

Algunos detalles de la Fiesta:

Fecha: Sábado 22 de enero,

Lugar: “Cool Room”, 164 Evans Ave. Toronto (Esquina de Evans e Islington)

Precio Entradas: $25 los adultos, $15 los muchachos hasta 15 años, $0 los niños menores de 10 años. Y $0 los voluntarios

(En el precio que usted paga por su entrada esta incluido: el disfrute del local, la organización,  la comida y la música).

Las bebidas las vamos a vender a precios económicos.

Horas: 7 pm abren las puertas. 8 pm se sirve la comida. 9 pm se recogen los votos y se cuentan. 10 pm se entregan los premios. La música y la barra continúan hasta la 1 am.

Música: Carlos Amarán y Mariano Ochoa, con el grupo “Borealis” nos amenizarán.

Sonido Cubano, Lula Jan 29

Join us for our famous salsa dance party. Sonido Cubano features some of Toronto’s hottest Cuban musicians playing irresistible dance music.

Sonido Cubano was formed in 1998 under the direction of Fernando Mon Padron a.k.a “Picolino”. Since the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s in Cuba, Picolino has been a prominent figure in the salsa and timba stages of Cuban music. He has performed with such greats as the original Roberto Fa, Reyes 73, La Tropicana as well as Los Van Van and many, many others. Having been travelling and performing for over 34 years internationally, Picolino found Toronto to be his home since 1995. Sonido Cubano has been a staple in the Canadian Latino movement of Cuban music. Bringing Salsa Cubana like no other band in the city, Sonido Cubano promises to keep the dancers moving.

Join us for dancing after 9pm ($15 includes the lesson) or come early and enjoy our $49 dinner and show package. Our dinner package guarantees seating for the night and includes  appetizer, main course and dessert, the 9pm beginner salsa lesson and three sets by the live salsa band.

Spend the day in Havana! Every Sunday, Lula offers a salsa brunch party featuring live music by Luis Mario Ochoa’s Traditional Cuban Quartet and a beginner salsa lesson by Miko Sobreira. Perfect for birthday and family celebrations, baby showers, office and retirement parties, the $25 cover includes buffet brunch, coffee, dance lesson, live music, tax and service. Kids 12 and under are free. Seatings at 11am and 1pm.

Patrons relax and eat for an hour or so, then hear the band for 45 minutes… and dance if the spirit moves them, and it should with this excellent band! The dance lesson is 1 pm, shared by both brunch seatings.

Born, raised and educated in Havana, Cuba, Luis Mario Ochoa is an accomplished singer, guitarist, composer, arranger, educator and bandleader. Artist page is here !
