Benefit for Esprit Orchestra, Hilario Durán Trio: May 27

May 10th, 2010
May ’10
27
8:00 pm

The next time someone makes bored noises… doing the same old things in Toronto… they should look at all the things that are just off the main stream.  One big thing that everybody here should do, is see a concert by Esprit Orchestra.  There’s a very healthy movement that tries to break all the rules of how to make music, and Esprit is at the forefront.   The 1988 Don McKellar movie “Last Night” made a big impression on me, and the music was a big part of that: Esprit Orchestra, led by Alex Pauk all these years.

The Esprit Orchestra invites you to join us for Benefête, a spirited spring bash that features incredible music by the Juno nominated Cuban jazz ensemble the Hilario Durán Trio, delightful food by Jamie Kennedy, and of course wine, provided by Cave Springs. On Thursday, May 27 the Benefête will transform the stunning Gardiner Museum into a delight for the senses: a lively fête that will be the unofficial start to spring.

Hilario Durán is ranked among the greats, as one of the most important contemporary Cuban pianists and arrangers today. His Latin Jazz Big Band album, “From The Heart”, featuring Paquito D’Rivera, was nominated for a Grammy in 2007, and won a Contemporary Jazz Album of the Year Juno Award. He has collected three Juno awards (his second on the day he became a Canadian citizen) and over a dozen National Jazz Awards. Hilario was also honoured with the prestigious Chico O’Farrill life time achievement award in Miami. Most recently, the Hilario Durán Trio was nominated for two 2010 Juno awards, Best Contemporary Jazz Album of the Year and Recording Engineer of the Year.

Tickets are going quickly! Tickets are $100 or $150 for patrons. A tax-receipt will be issued for the maximum amount allowable after the event. Call the Esprit office to reserve your tickets to this sensational soiree. 416 815 7887 or visit our website www.espritorchestra.com. The Benefête is a fundraiser for the Esprit Orchestra.

Show is at 8 pm May 27… at The Gardiner Museum. 111 Queen’s Park.

Founded in 1983 by Music Director and Conductor Alex Pauk, the award-winning Esprit Orchestra is Canada’s only full-sized orchestra devoted exclusively to commissioning, performing and promoting new orchestral music. This 80-member orchestra is focused on performing a repertoire of contemporary orchestral music and developing a Canadian musical literature. It commissions and premieres new works each season and ensures continued public access to these works through repeat performances, radio broadcasts, compact discs, film recordings, as well as national and international tours.
