Here’s a reminder of an essential concert coming up.
From Jane Bunnett c/o Larry Kramer: “This is the most important concert that I have done in twenty years!! “
This grand concert at Koerner Hall, April 17, 8 PM… brings together the best of the older, young, and in-between piano talent of Cuba, in a retake of the Cuban Piano Masters in the last century (YouTube video link).
Beautiful new hall, talent you’ll likely never see together again… what’s to decide? Tickets $20 to $50.
Assisting festivities will be Larry Kramer, trumpet, and some of the very best local talent:
Roberto Riverón, bass Jorge (Papiosco) Torres, percussion Luis Orbegoso, percussion
Also from Cuba the legendary drummer CHANGUITO will be performing since he is still in town so if you missed him at Lula or want to see him again , here is another chance.
April 10 sees not only La Charanga Habanera put on their big show … but Alex Cuba is also in town. And with his exemplary promotion package… you too can “go with the ‘Fro”…
Will he show up later at the Charanga Concert? … well, stranger things have happened here in the Cuban music scene in Toronto.

Sometimes there is a rumba event, for example on Sunday Apr 4 … que vengan los rumberos!
This weekly party has very quickly become the biggest club party for Cuban music and dance in town. The Sunday event is a salsa cubana/timba/reggaeton kind of night. Music for a Cuban audience and for the dancers who prefer casino to salsa…… At 8:30 pm, the Rueda de Casino class here has taken Toronto by storm. Come to Babaluú for the real thing… the authentic Rueda de Casino like they do it in Cuba!!
DJ Billy Bryans spins the tunes. Sarita is back teaching the Sunday Rueda de Casino class. (Special thanks to Trevor Forde for filling in while she was away).
Do you want actually dance CASINO, and not LA or NY styles, in your ruedas? Me too.
Anyone want to meet regulary to do some casino rueda, Cuban style?
I am not a professional or dance instructor. You teach me what you know and I teach you what I know. The important thing is to keep dancing.
As it turns out, we are meeting every Saturday downtown, 12-3 PM in a central downtown location. And alternate Thursdays, about 8-10 pm, same location. Find out more details by emailing: joseph kim <joekim27@yahoo.com>. There is no FINANCIAL cost… but you WILL be required to sweat… dancing with “vigah”… to 100% Cuban timba music.
