Celtic music in Havana… not for the first time

April 23rd, 2010

Havana was the busiest port in the Americas at many points in the 1700’s and 1800’s.

The docks were completely jammed with slaves from Africa, and soldiers and seamen from everywhere.

In the day, it was the noisy bustle of cargo offload, onload, warehousing, ships coming in, ships leaving … and serious money changing hands.

At night… womanizing, gambling, robbery, rum, and rumba. In the air, a rich melange of culture and music from everywhere.

The rumba, the special, uniquely Cuban music and dance, originated there in the dockyards of Havana and Matanzas.

Above it all, the aristocrats looking down their noses at the rough life of the slaves and lower classes… many of whose lives were less secure than the slaves who at least had a cargo value.

Many of the seamen were from the British Isles lower classes pressed into service against their wills, or deluded by promises of wealth and adventure… not only England but Celts from Ireland, Wales, and Scotland.

And, some music like this was certainly heard in the lower port streets of Cuba and Matanzas through the night along with music from everywhere.

Scholars haven’t proposed an origin for the clave rhythm of Cuba. It’s difficult partly because the lower classes were deemed unworthy of serious consideration at the time. But, it’s easy to suppose that the rhythm of the hornpipe had it’s share of influence on the first rumberos … and the rhythm of the clave, as sometimes it was played with the syncopation common with the Cuban clave.

Weekend reminder: Eliades Ochoa, Glenda del E

April 21st, 2010

Glenda del E is the package: a young pianist of excellent Cuban musical heritage, and a York U music graduate… presents classical with energy and control, jazz with dexterity and style, son de Cuba with the genuine tumbao. .. who else in Toronto can put this all together?  It’s called a CD Pre-release at Trane Studio, Sunday evening, and features many excellent musicians backing her up.

Eliades: You know him from Wim Wenders movie Buena Vista Social Club, one of Cuba’s favorite country musicians.  I like the moniker “The Johnny Cash of Cuba”!  Friday and Saturday at the Royal Theatre.

At LULAWORLD 2010…  Saturday, 22 May 2010:   Viva Celia – A tribute to the great Celia Cruz

Musical director Sean Bellaviti gathers an all-star line up of Toronto salsa talent to pay a musical homage to the one and only Queen of Salsa. Featuring vocalists

Patricia Cano, Alberto and Alberto and Luis Mario Ochoa.

Like jazz icon Ella Fitzgerald, Celia had the unique ability to take standards and make her version the definitive recording – creating classic after classic over the course of her five-decade long career. From the early days in Cuba to her work with the Fania All-Stars in New York and her numerous world tours, we see the whole history of salsa itself reflected in the career of this remarkable artist. Celia was perhaps the most loved salsa vocalist of all time with twenty-three gold albums and and a Grammy award to her name. With arrangements contributed by eight different Canadian latin jazz and salsa artists including Cuban-born, Juno-winning pianist Hilario Duran, the Lula All-Stars’ Viva Celia goes beyond the performance of Cruz’s numerous hits and aims to honour the spirit of Celia’s inimitable sound and creative energy.

Sean Bellaviti (music director, piano, and arranger)
Luis Orbegoso (music director, congas, vocals, and arranger)
Patricia Cano (lead vocals)
Alberto Alberto (lead vocals)
Rudy Bolaños (bass)
Luis Mario Ochoa (tres, vocals, and arranger)

May ’10

8:00 pm

Look at the line up for this show… and marvel once again at the talent we have in this city.  If there were as many appreciative fans as there should be… it really would be Havana North in Toronto.  But, there are more fans every day so these talented artists may yet get their due respect in Canada.

Afrolatino Dance Company and Roberto Linares Brown bring us this sizzling Cuban cabaret, reminiscent of a night at Havana’s Tropicana – complete with beautiful show girls and live Cuban orchestra featuring special guests Changuito, Telmary, Angel Luis, Alberto Alberto and Yani Borrel. With DJ Billy Bryans.

The finest Cuban performers in the coutry join forces to take you on a one night trip to Havana.  Here’s the FACEBOOK event page.

Albena de Assis founder of Afrolatino has been a major force in creating and fostering the Cuban salsa scene that Toronto now enjoys, increasing awareness of the cultural roots of Cuban dance through lessons, performances and a partnership with groundbreaking presenters Okokan Productions. Afrolatino will treat audience to special cuban dance review as part of our I am Cuba LULAWOLRD presentation.

The performance will be followed by a dance lesson byAna Machado. A professional dancer since she was 6 years old, Ana has danced with Havana’s Escuela Nacional de la Danza,  the prestigious Compania de la Danza Moderna and as lead dancer in the famous Tropicana dance troupe, with which she has toured the globe

Bandleader/arranger/pianist/composer extraordinaire Roberto Linares Brown was a catalyst for the creation of Lula Lounge’s popular Havana Norte series which has featured a who’s who of Toronto-based Cuban musicans. Linares Brown has been contributing to the series since 2006 performing original compositions that became the basis of his brilliant 2008 solo release, “Que No Se Pierda La Essencia”. After an extended tour of Europe in 2008, Roberto Linares Bbrown (aka El Seña’) returned to Canada – boasting new compositions and with a renewed desire to take Toronto’s alsa scene to the next level.

A night focussing on the riches of Cuban dance culture would be incomplete without DJ Billy Bryans. As one of the best salsa DJs in Toronto, as well as a promoter and publicist, Billy been pivotal in bringing the music of Cuba to a wider Canadian audience.

Afrolatino Dance Company at 8pm, dance lesson at 9pm,  Roberto Linares Brown Orchestra with special guests at 10pm.
