Cuba Tradicional at Young Centre, North York

October 27th, 2009
Oct ’09
30
10:30 pm

Drop in for a special 1 hour show of Cuban Traditional music at Young Centre, North York $20 as part of Canwest Cabaret series.

Inspired by Cuban music icons of the early 20th century such as Miguel Matamoros, Ignacio Piñeiro and Los Compadres, Luis Mario Ochoa presents his latest project: The Cuba Tradicional Sextet. The band recreates in its authentic form the son Cubano, the most popular of the Cuban genres: a result of the blending of Spanish and African roots in the Caribbean island. This was the pre-Buena Vista Social Club era of Cuba in the 1920\’s and 30\’s. The Cuba Tradicional Sextet features bandleader Luis Mario Ochoa on lead vocals and guitar, Pablosky Rosales on vocals and tres guitar, Alexander Brown on trumpet, Paco Luviano on bass, and Rosendo \”Chendy\” Len Junior and Senior on back vocals and percussion.

Some Pupy pix and videos, Oct 23 show Toronto

October 26th, 2009

Note from Sophie, owner of the Cuba in Toronto. com site and also concert promoter:

Roger Humbert from The Live Music Report  posted some lovely pics form the night. There will also be more. They really tell the story of the night and what a great night – The little impromptu performance in the intermission was from members of the Flying steps a Hip Hop crew in town to work on the movie set that I was working on called BEAT THE WORLD.

With permission from Roger, here’s a sampling:

Note from Ricardito, other admin here: Youtube has a video of the rueda group I’ve been involved with…  great work team, and thanks to our great leader Trevor… and the “world-class” founder of the Toronto Casino Rueda Practice: Joseph !  And all the people who come out, and the 8 who did the show as the “Red Rocket Rumberos”.  No that’s not Pupy playing Cabeza Mala, it was done during the pre-show Cuban Dance Fest ;-)

Afro-Cuban All Stars at Massey Hall – Oct 27

October 26th, 2009
Oct ’09
27
8:00 pm

Wim Wenders made the movie “Buena Vista Social Club”, establishing a trade mark for the grand style of Cuban dance music of the 50’s and earlier.

The echo of this phenomenon became the “Afro-Cuban All Stars”, artists of the era and younger stars too gathered by Juan de Marcos González, all paying homage to the inimitable style of those times.  They have been successfully touring the world continually since then with the time-tested “cuban son” repertoire of stars like “El Benny” Moré, Felix Chappotín, and others in the style.

Tickets at Roy Thomson Hall.  And here is a list of Canadian venues in the tour.

One of the true giants of modern Cuban music with both LOS VAN VAN and his own group LOS QUE SON SON, PUPY PEDROSO will lead his crack 16 piece band through the songs that have made him famous in Cuba and throughout Latin America and Europe.

Adding to the evenings festivities will be Pupy’s collaboration with singer CANDIDO FABRE, famous for his unique improvisational skills and original songs that have been performed by artists such as Celia Cruz, Issac Delgado, and Oscar D’leon.

The opening event of the first annual Cuban Dance Festival, Pupy Pedroso’sconcert will be augmented with dance performance by Duane Wrenn from Energetic Soul Studios in the U.S.A.

Cándido Fabré comes for the first time to Toronto.  Without his wonderful Charanga band this time, but if he’s a hit… maybe he’ll be back and bring them !  This time, I think Pupy and band will be able to back him up just fine … In the word of Fabré… “agitala”, shake it !

Another Pupy song “Se Parece A Aquel”… this one is from his latest album “Tranquilo que Yo Controlo”

More Fabré … Yo Quiero Gozar…
