Anacaona BIO
Known as “Las Mulatissimas del Sabor”, this glamorous all female orchestra was founded in 1932 Havana by Cuchito Castro when the political situation in Cuba resulted in many university closings, forcing Cuchito to abandon her studies and choose another path. Defying the dominant belief that women were not capable of playing ’son’ music, Cuchito’s friends and sisters formed a top notch septet and named the group after the Indian queen Anacaona.
Performing on the radio and also nightly in the open-air cafes, they soon found an enthusiastic audience. With concerts in 1938 in New York and Paris and films in Mexico, Anacaona rose to international fame, spreading their exotic ’son’ rhythms across the world.
Today Anacaona has 16 female musicians who blend traditional and contemporary rhythms in a knockout show that has secured their reputation as one of the major forces in Cuban popular music at home and around the world.
The evening also includes DJ Billy Bryans supplying all the latest music from Havana.

REMINDER: Montreal is the place for street parties, the Montreal Jazz Fest always has some of the most memorable… and this year will be a great one for fans of Cuban music.

That’ll be the Fiesta Cubana with Los Van Van, and Afro-Cuban All Stars.
If you don’t have a room reservation already, you have a challenge!
It’s at 7:00 pm July 12, Scène Rio Tinto Alcan at the Corner Sainte-Catherine and Jeanne-Mance. So many people will go down the road (6 hours to Montreal) we’ll treat this as a local event.
What to do before the show? Fear not, this festival is second to none, and the other free street events will amaze you …
Speaking personally… As far as I know, last time Montreal did a free top-Cuban concert like this was 2002, with Issac Delgado bringing up an all-star cast including guests Jenny Valdes… back this year as a key member of Los Van Van… and a young Ailyn, today lead singer with Azucar Negra. The last time Toronto had a free Cuban outdoor party of this level was 10 years ago… 1999, the Harbourfront show with Los Van Van… so it’s a big event.
While we’re on memory lane … let’s not forget the more recent, and the biggest concert of Los Van Van here… the smash hit December 9th 2006 at Kool Haus (click for the website) ticketed concert… produced by Okokan and Billy Bryans… with 2100 people in the house… er… haus.
