Learn Cuban Cha-cha-cha at AfroLatino Dance Co, start Jan 18

January 14th, 2012

This 4-week course (click here, then on “Cha Cha Cha”) will focus on the traditional Cuban dance called Cha Cha Cha. One of the most well known Latin dances in the world, Cha Cha Cha was created to follow the music introduced by Cuban composer Enrique Jorrin, in 1953. The rhythm was developed from the danzón by a synchopation of the fourth beat. The name is onomatopoeic, derived from the rhythm of the güiro (scraper) and the shuffling of the dancers’ feet.

Taught by Yareneys Montes de Oca, it will focus on the timming and most used figures in Cha Cha Cha. Minimum Intermediate I level in Salsa is recommended in order to have an easier grasp of the timing (“contratiempo” or “On 2″). .

This course is by registration only and requires a minimum number of registrations.

Admin note: Outside Cuba, hardly ever do you find the Cuban traditional timing taught.  If you know cha-cha-cha, here’s a quick check…  to see if you have the contratiempo timing.

Try dancing to this song… Tremendo Vacilón.  If the timing of your cha-cha-cha step coincides with the words “cha-cha-cha” in the chorus, you’ve got it.  If not… this course will fix you up just fine…. ;-)

Changuy Havana at Lula, Fri Feb 3

Feb

10:00 pm

Were you there at the great Cuban timba nights by Julio at Gladstone Hotel?  The band was brilliant at generating the feeling of  Havana dance nights, but they could have used a little more practice time.  They were called Black Market.

Well the good news is, they have had the time to hone the sound… and they are at Lula now, with a great sound system.  And so, you need to go see them, the band is called Changuy Havana.

12 great Cuban musicians offer an orchestra with a new latin flavour and a repertoire based on the most popular Latin dance rhythms like salsa, merengue, cumbia, bachata and son.

One of TO’s great NEW badass Cuban bands, these guys grab the crowd and make them dance!

2012 is going to be an exciting and very special year for one of Canada’s most celebrated Jazz artists:  Jane Bunnett.

Back In February 1982, Jane and her partner Larry Cramer landed in Santiago de Cuba (on the Eastern side of Cuba) and had no idea that the next 30 years would bring them international acclaim for her distinctly original collaborations with some of the greatest musicians in the culturally rich country of Cuba.

As one of Canada’s most celebrated musicians, Jane has garnered 6 Juno Awards, 2 Grammy nominations and a host of other International awards recognizing her music and her mastery of the soprano saxophone and the flute.

Admin note: The Spirits of Havana is the name of the group of Cuban musicians who accompany Jane Bunnett on a given occasion, in this case you’d have to guess it’d be essentially the same band as will be playing with Jane the next evening at Lula Lounge — none other than Son Aché… those who want a good view of the band and no distractions will favor Hugh’s Room, those who have to dance when they here this band play, will flock to Lula Lounge !
