He’s achieved already significant success, and here’s a chance to see his work honoured in an appropriate way: a gallery in the community that he has done so much for.

10/10/2012 – 11/18/2012

INDEXG (main gallery)

OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday, October 13, 2012 – 3-6 pm

IndexG is pleased to present the latest work by Jose Ortega.

Each piece in this series of paint and collage on wood and cardboard is improvised from the first step, often a single shape or brush stroke, until the end where a narrative reveals itself. The process is inspired by music, jazz in particular, as well as discarded newspapers, chain store circulars and textile designs. Each piece is approached as a song with rhythm, color, patterns, harmony and a story.

Born in Guayaquil, Ecuador, Ortega established himself as an artist in New York City and made Toronto his second home in 1997. He has worked on commissions for such clients such as Absolut Vodka, MTV, Apple Computers, Bloomingdale’s and the New York Times. Jose has been the subject of numerous articles in international art and design journals. His work has been exhibited in North and South America, Europe and Asia.

Ortega has also designed and completed many public art commissions including a series of mosaic murals for two NYC subway stations and a stained glass window for the Buckingham Hotel. Ortega’s recent projects are a series of street murals on Dundas West and postage stamp designs for the US and Ecuadorian postal services. He is the co-founder and artistic director of Lula Lounge.
