Solidarity Rock, May 31 at Sneaky Dee’s
I’ve recently gotten involved with a group supporting the emerging rock &
roll scene and freedom of expression in Cuba. We are doing the first
Toronto benefit show May 31st at Sneaky Dee’s. Solidarity Rock, is
involved with sending instruments, equipment, bands, sound engineers and
DIY ideas to Cuba. Cuban bands get the opportunity to tour in Canada!
I am contacting you with the hope of connecting the Toronto Cuban community
with Solidarity Rock. If you know any people, bands or groups in the Cuban
community that may be interested in Rock and Roll let me know!
Here is the Facebook event with some more details..
I suppose they are likely in touch with Elmer Ferrer: http://www.elmerferrer.com/

DON’T SEE YOUR CITY? STAND WITH US BY HOSTING A SOLIDARITY ROCK PARTY/SHOW/BBQ/GET TOGETHER.
Solidarity Rock is a group of musicians, artists and creative people who are working together in support of rock’n’roll and free expression in Cuba. We’ve been bringing donated instruments and musicians to the island paradise for the past four years and successfully run the first 5 rock tours of any description through the country. Western Canadian bands 7and7is, SLATES, Kids on Fire, Hangloose and the Vicious Cycles have been breaking ground and making big things happen for rock musicians and fans across Cuba and have helped found and maintain a DIY scene in the centre of the country. Rock music was once illegal, now it’s the coolest thing in Cuba and everyone wants to be a rocker.
We’re asking you to join with us in support of our shared love for rock’n’roll. All you have to do is join this event to hear all the news we’re rolling out from now till early June.
It’s all in support of our summer projects! This year is going to be a big one as we return to Cuba in May and July to continue working in Solidarity with our Cuban partners. May will bring the opening of our Solidarity Rock photo show in Sancti Spiritus, Cuba. The show was funded by the Edmonton Arts Council to be donated to the Cuban arts agency the Asociacion Hermanos Saiz and it will travel from city to city across Cuba over the next year.
In July, we’re returning for some more rock’n’roll exchange as we’re joined by Vancouver’s Jesse Gander (Previous Tenants, Ghost House, DBS) for a recording project like no other. Jesse is a recording engineer at the Hive Creative Labs (hivestudios.net) and a veteran of the DIY music scene in Canada. He’s bringing the opportunity for these Cuban bands to be able to have the same quality of recordings as their Canadian counterparts (Jesse actually recorded both the SLATES albums and mastered the Vicious Cycles debut record).
Over the course of the next month, we’re going to be announcing even more big news as we gear up to giver. If you can make it to the shows, and help out in that way, amazing. If you can’t, you can still join this event and help spread the word that DIY rock music is alive and well in Cuba, and We’re All in this Together!
